Daptastic
Daptastic icon: a gold star on a memory card

Your favourites, on your player.

Daptastic copies the albums, tracks and playlists you've starred in Navidrome to your digital audio player — the original lossless files, and only what changed since last time. Plug it in, click Sync Now, done.

Free and open source · macOS 15 or later · Install notes

How it works

Daptastic lives in your menu bar. Set it up once; after that your player stays in step with your stars.

Connect to Navidrome

Sign in with your Navidrome account. Daptastic sets up what it needs on the server for you.

Plug in your player

Connect your DAP in USB storage mode, or insert its SD card, and pick it once.

Sync from a notification

Next time you plug it in, a notification offers Sync Now. When it's done, another tells you what changed.

What it does

Built for people who self-host their music and care how it sounds.

Lossless originals

Files come straight from the server, byte for byte. Never transcoded.

Starred albums, tracks and playlists

Every starred album in full, every starred track, and every playlist. Starred artists are skipped on purpose — one star could pull in hundreds of albums.

Real playlists on the device

Playlists show up in the player's own Playlists screen, curly quotes and accents included.

Only what changed

Each sync copies new and updated tracks only. Un-star an album and it's removed next time.

Careful with your card

It only ever deletes files it put there itself — music you copied yourself is left alone. If your stars suddenly shrink, it asks first.

Checks space first

If it won't fit, you'll know before a single file is copied — with the largest albums listed, so you know what to un-star.

Safe to interrupt

Unplug or cancel mid-sync: no half-copied files are left behind, and the next sync picks up where it stopped.

Keeps itself up to date

New versions arrive as a notification and install in a click — no re-downloading, no repeat security prompts.

As fast as your card allows

Downloading and writing overlap, and Spotlight is kept off the card, so syncs run at close to the card's top speed.

You'll need

  • A Mac running macOS 15 or later.
  • A Navidrome server your Mac can reach (developed against 0.58).
  • A music player that shows up as a USB drive, or its SD card. Built and tested with a TempoTec Variations V1 (HiBy OS); other HiBy OS players will probably work.

Good to know

  • Your library should be organised as Artist/YYYY - Album/NN - Title — the card mirrors it.
  • Your password stays in your Mac's Keychain, and Daptastic only talks to your own server.
  • Navidrome's player setting "Report Real Path" is switched on for Daptastic automatically.

Install

  1. Download Daptastic.dmg and open it.
  2. Drag Daptastic onto the Applications folder.
  3. Open Daptastic from Applications. The first time, macOS will say it can't verify the app — click Done.
  4. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down to the message about Daptastic and click Open Anyway, then confirm.
  5. Setup opens and walks you through the rest.
Why the warning? Daptastic isn't notarised by Apple yet, which is what removes that message. It's open source, so you can read the code — or build it yourself from the GitHub repository.

Questions

Will it delete music I put on the card myself?

No. Daptastic keeps a record on the card of every file it copied, and only ever removes files on that list. Everything else on the card is yours and is left alone.

What happens when I un-star something?

It's removed from the card at the next sync. If a large share of your stars disappears at once — or all of them — Daptastic asks before deleting anything, in case it's a mistake.

Does it convert my files?

No. Daptastic uses Navidrome's download endpoint, which returns the original file exactly as stored on your server.

Will it work with my player?

It's built and tested with a TempoTec Variations V1. Any player that mounts as a USB drive will receive the music; the playlists use the format HiBy OS reads, so other HiBy OS players should show them too. Reports for other players are welcome on GitHub.

Why does it ask about my local network?

macOS asks before an app can reach devices on your network. Daptastic needs it to talk to your Navidrome server.

Does it work with other Subsonic servers?

Daptastic is developed against Navidrome, and it relies on Navidrome's "Report Real Path" player setting to mirror your folder layout. Other Subsonic servers aren't supported for now.
